Piloted by Cheedaman and Croutonium.

BEAR*'s description

BEAR* is a multiplayer survival horror game published on Roblox, created on March 16th, 2020, and released on September 20th, 2020. Published by Cheedaman, as well as developed by Croutonium, biscuitpuff01, PapaDoomsday, macabreroses, DooLittal, and DaDominator630.

Overview

In BEAR*, 2-10 players are required in order for the round to start. When a round starts, the game chooses which player gets selected as Bear, depending on their Bear Chance. Once a player gets selected as Bear, the rest of the player(s) are selected as survivor(s) and the round begins. As a survivor, the player must traverse the map to complete puzzles in order to decrease the timer to win the round, while simultaneously, avoiding Bear. As Bear, the player must traverse the map to find and kill survivor(s), before the round ends. Bear can use one-out-of-six abilities to aid them in catching survivors quicker.

During intermission, the player can purchase skins, kill effects, and gears with either Quidz or Gems in the shops. Furthermore, players can vote one-out-of-four options for which map should the next round take place at, through the Map Voting system. Each option includes their own gamemode. Once the voting ends, the round will begin shortly.

On Sundays, an event titled, Star Sunday will be active on public servers. Star Sunday selects one-out-of-three Map Packs and Star-Sunday exclusive gamemodes. Star Sunday also includes a 25% increase on XP and Quidz from rounds, has a higher chance to earn Gems, and selects three skins from past events to be obtainable in the Gems Shop.

Development

Pre-Release

Very little is known about the early stages of developement. BEAR* was announced as it was created on March 16th, 2020 and it would've be released on April 2020. However, the assets were stolen by Manny20453, a former contributor who was kicked out for being under 13, which lead to the delay of BEAR*. At this time BEAR* was called The 2nd Game. As well as having the description "soon my friend." The game was also going to be called BEAR 2 however this was changed for unknown reasons.

Release

BEAR* released on September 20th, 2020 in the version 0.5.0. Here is a showchase of how the game looked when it first released:

  • Promocodes: "ALPHABEAR" (Reward: Alpha) Badges: The OG Badge (No Reward) and Mandem Gift Box (No Reward at the Time)
  • Tutorial is a location that can be found in the pressing the Interrogation button. TUTORIAL DVD used to start in a small room which will then transition to another build with four small rooms. The first room consists of solving a Wire Puzzle. Solving the Wire Puzzle will give the player a key that can access the next room. The second room consists of finding the cheese to place on the Cheese Altar. Solving the Cheese Altar will grant access to the next room. The third room consists of solving a Number Code. The code could be found in the first room on the billboard paper. Solving the Number Code will grant access to the next room, while also giving the player a green fuse. The fourth room consists of placing the green fuse into the Generator Puzzle. Solving the Fuse Puzzle will grant access to a dark hallway where Bear will come out of a corner and chase the player until they die.

The event of this year is very similar to the one of last year, acting more like an update to that event rather than a new event. The reason for this could be because Cheedaman was working on the TRILOGY* PART 3 Update and he didn't have time to work on this event:

POST-TRILOGY* PART 3

Discontinuation

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

@everyone because this is, indeed, pretty important

It is time I talk to you all about the future of BEAR* as the game, and as the company.

What's happening to BEAR*? [Game]

Approximately by the start of 2024, Updates for BEAR* , for the most part, will be discontinued.

Why?

BEAR* has been our main project for the past 3 Years. While it has frequently been stressful, we've had a lot of fun making it for you all.

Having said that, reaching the 3 Year mark, It has become more and more difficult to keep this game moving forward. The formula, which has been in play for more than 4 years at this point counting BEAR (Alpha), is admittedly, getting old both figuratively and literally. The spark we had for the game just isn't as bright anymore, and instead of trying to force it and continue until it fizzles out, we want to take that leap and try something new.

We believe that it is time to focus more on the new era. The next chapter, so to speak.

What's happening to BEAR*? [Company]

As for us as a studio and a company, we're not leaving. In fact, I believe this change is necessary for us, and will allow us to focus more on bigger, brighter and bolder projects. What's Next?

Coming up next, we still have content up and coming for BEAR* before the end, but beyond that, we've got some awesome new projects on the horizon!

My next release is a game that has been in the works for quite a long time now, and it's almost ready and will be released this year!

As a team, our next project is planned, and we're preparing to start. We will likely be keeping a much more public development log for this one where and when possible.

What about BEAR (Alpha)? Well, we have some unfinished business with alpha. More on that later.

Thank you for reading.

I didn't want this to be a boo-hoo cry announcement so I tried my best to avoid that. The future is bright and we're excited! But I also didn't want to leave you all in the dark about what's to come.

If you have any further questions related to this topic, you can DM them to me and if I believe they're important to answer I'll post them either here or maybe a separate channel.

Pre-Discontiunation

In September 8, 2023 Cheedaman posted an announcement on the BEAR* discord server. Saying how he lost the motivation of working on BEAR* and that he would discontinue the game by the beginning of 2024. These were some last updates before the discontinuation:

Post-Discontinuation

THE BRICKBATTLERS acted as a final update before the discontinuation of BEAR*. However, there would be some small updates and events afterwards with features that were either added for fun or were already being worked on:

  • Cinco De Mayo 2024 May 4th, 2024:
    • New Cinco De Mayo skins, kill effects and gears. Some being reintroduced, and others being brand new.
    • A new ability called Gloop, which allows you to spit out goop at players, damaging them aswell as reducing their sprint and slowing them down for a temporary amount of time.
    • Lobby was decorated to fit the Cinco De Mayo Theme.
    • Secret map in the _EXTRA map pack: Haunted Mansion 2006
  • Malbear Secret Update July 26th, 2024:
    • A new map called Mischief.exe was added, aswell as the Malbear boss that resides in the map.
    • The Malhost and Malbear skins, unlocked by obtaining the LOSS and X_X badges respectively, aswell as the Maldar.exe gear from X_X.
    • Five new skins: Y2K, Memz, M.A.L.B.O.B., Cryptopillar and Adfly, each of which being obtained by using the Maldar.exe gear in a specific map for each skin.
    • New social gears were added that only some developers could award. These gears are known as "Dev Plushies"
  • 2nd Collaboration with POINT OF NO RETURN September 1st, 2024:
    • Two new skins: the Arachne Survivor skin and the B.O.B. skin MIKE, which are both unlocked by obtainted the WEBS OF SORROW badge in POINT OF NO RETURN.

Trivia

  • Before BEAR* was released, BEAR* was originally titled, The 2nd Game. As well as having the description, "soon my friend."
  • BEAR* was originally going to be named, BEAR 2. It is unclear why the title was changed.
  • For a while, BEAR* had a slight title change after its release where there will be a space in front of the *. Resulting in the title being, BEAR *.
    • The reason for this change would be due to Roblox's moderation. However, the title was reverted back to BEAR* after a while.
  • Gems were released alongside BEAR* but their was no use of them, as well as no way to obtain them.
    • This has since been changed as gems can now be obtained through Daily Missions and can be used on skins, kill effects, and gears that can be obtained by paying gems when the Cinco De Mayo 2023 event was released.
  • BEAR*'s Sam Update icon references the 2018 Yandhi icon, with another being a reference to Kanye’s MBDTF album.
  • Near BEAR*'s release, there was a counter in the BEAR (Alpha) lobby. Once the counter reached zero, it would act as a teleporter to BEAR* until it was removed.
    • There was a delay in the counter where the release was three minutes early and not at the zero mark.
  • Alongside the Yikes Rebirth, BEAR*'s thumbnails have been changed to show the renovated maps.
    • BEAR* thumbnails have been changed for the second time alongside the N/A.
    • BEAR*'s thumbnails have been changed for the third time alongside the Third Anniversary event.
  • BEAR* has been discontinued on January 1st, 2024.
    • However, BEAR* has been getting updates occasionally with features either added for fun or features that were already being worked on.
